Morrisons launches £3 wonky veg box that ‘can feed a family for a week’

The boxes contain about 4.2kg of vegetables, made up of eight seasonal varieties, including staples such as carrots, onions, potatoes and cauliflower, sourced from British growers.


Morrisons has launched a £5 veg box which it claims can feed a family of four for a week. Customers who don’t mind their vegetables “wonky” can buy a box for just £3, plus a delivery charge, of between £1 and £5.

Buying the wonky box has the added benefit of helping the environment by saving on food waste. Tonnes of vegetables which don’t match up to strict supermarket size and shape parameters are thrown away each year

Morrisons is going head-to-head with big-four supermarket rival, Asda, which recently launched its own box of misshapen vegetables for £3.50.

Aldi reports record sales but profits drop amid price war

Aldi has reported record sales in the UK and Ireland for last year but its profits have fallen sharply amid a fierce price war among supermarkets.

The German discounter said sales rose 13.5% to £8.7bn in 2016, but operating profit dropped 17%.

The chain blamed the fall on its “continued investment in prices and infrastructure”.

Aldi chief executive Matthew Barnes said its strategy was to offer “the lowest prices in Britain”.

“We’re doing everything we can to insulate customers from those cost increases, making sure our prices are the lowest in the UK, every day of the year,” he said.

Aldi, which currently has 726 stores in the UK, said it planned to open a further 70 this year and would invest a further £459m.

The German chain currently has a 6.9% share of the market, according to the latest industry figures from Kantar Worldpanel.

This figure makes it the fifth-biggest supermarket in the UK after Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons.

PwC reveals black and Asian workers are paid 13% less

Black, Asian and minority-ethnic staff (BAME) who work at PwC in the UK earn almost 13% less than other employees, according to figures provided by the professional services firm.

The firm said its BAME workers were statistically paid less because more of them worked in administrative and junior roles, rather than senior ones.

PwC said it had published the data to help it speed up progress on the issue.

Currently reporting on BAME pay isn’t required under government regulations.

PwC said it hoped that publishing the data would help the firm to tackle “ethnicity challenges”.

“The more transparent we are with our diversity and social mobility data, the more we hold ourselves accountable to achieving real change,” said PwC chairman Kevin Ellis.

At £4.40, Surrey becomes most expensive place in UK to buy a pint

Surrey has overtaken London as the most expensive place in the UK to buy a pint, according to the latest Good Pub Guide.

Despite the fact that a beer in the capital costs £4.20 on average, drinkers can expect to pay 20p more in the traditionally well-off county, where house prices are twice the UK average.

It is the only time since the guide was first published in 1982 that the average price in London has not been the highest in Britain.

Fiona Stapley, the editor of the Good Pub Guide 2018, believes the capital’s dip in the ranking may be a result of the type of pub the handbook favours.

“We’re not sure why this has happened, but Surrey is so affluent. It’s always going to be the expensive places – either London or Surrey. It may be that we have quite a lot of little local pubs in the guide that are London locals and they’re not as expensive as some of the big pubs [in the capital] that young people go to,” she said.

The guide found that the average price of a pint of beer in Britain is £3.60, up 13p (3.7%) in a year, compared with a year-on-year rise of 1p in 2016.

Herefordshire and Yorkshire were the cheapest places to buy a pint (£3.31), followed closely by Shropshire (£3.33). London and Surrey were the only two places in the guide’s “rip off” category, with Sussex the next most expensive at £3.82.

Stapley said pubs were facing a number of cost pressures, including inflation at 2.6%, which made for a difficult trading environment.

“The chancellor’s decision to increase duty on beer for the first time in five years has been a massive blow to brewers, publicans and their customers,” she said.

“There’s also been a huge increase [in costs] as a result of the national living wage, which has hit the industry really hard. The cost of raw materials is high for anything to do with making food and brewing beer, even boring things like electricity and gas.

“Although landlords do try to absorb some of the costs themselves, they can’t cover all the increases, so some of it has to go on to customers. It’s a worry for a lot of publicans who may already be struggling anyway.”

With 21 pubs closing each week, Stapley warned that even more could be forced to shut their doors as a result. Nevertheless, she said it was important to be positive about the future of the industry, pointing to research by Oxford University published earlier this year, which found that people who have a local they visit regularly tend to feel more socially engaged and contented.

“If you’ve not have a good day or if you’ve had a fantastic day, you want to share it with people. It just makes you feel that you belong, it makes you feel at home, it’s vey cosseting,” she said.

McDonald’s workers to go on strike in Britain for first time

McDonald’s faces its first strike since it opened in the UK in 1974, as well as protests by unions and the public at several restaurants over pay and working conditions.

About 40 staff will go on strike on Monday at two restaurants in Cambridge and Crayford, south-east London, after a ballot in favour of industrial action amid concerns over low wages and the use of zero hours contracts.

The fast-food chain has been one of the biggest users of zero-hours contracts in Britain, although it has recently started offering workers the option of moving to fixed hours.

The Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union, one of Britain’s oldest trade unions, said staff were demanding a wage of at least £10 an hour, more secure working hours and union recognition.
